A ceremony dating back to the early years of American education will be re-enacted at SU on Thursday, December 6,2007 to celebrate the 162nd year of our fraternity. It is the Black Lantern Processional of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, born in the mid 1800's at Yale. Members march in silence in dark robes, carrying a Diogenes Lantern (The lantern's name comes from the kind of light carried by the Greek philosopher Diogenes, in his search for an honest man). The manner of the processional is passed down from the early days at Yale when members of Alpha Sig marched to various student residences to announce to candidates that they had been selected for membership. The new member was placed into the front of the march, and then taken to Fraternity rooms for his first meeting.
On December 1st, Alpha Sig initiated the new Upsilon class into the fraternity. To celebrate the our new members, brothers and their dates gathered for our annual Fall Semi-Formal. Check out some pictures:
Hazing Has New Enemy
Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity in conjunction with 20 international fraternities and sororities have joined forces in a coalition to establish the Anti-Hazing Hotline. The toll-free number is 1-888-NOT-HAZE (1-888-668-4293). The Anti-Hazing Hotline is part of the ongoing attempt to end hazing on college campuses. The line is available to those who think they, or students they know, have been or may become victims of hazing. Callers may remain anonymous or provide personal information so their concerns can be responded to directly.
Fraternity
and Sorority letters are easy to spot on campus, but the Greek letters do not
convey the values of each Greek organization. This year through a unique act of
kindness the men from Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity plan to stand out from the
rest. Alpha Sig will spread goodwill by handing out free stuff and performing
free services throughout the semester. “Charity is a core value of our fraternity and
we are making sure the campus experiences it. Not to mention we are
authentically just trying to make someone’s day.” says Ryan Kelly, a psychology
major in Alpha Sig.
